It's Hoops Time...
Randolph recognized on and off the floor...
If you are a hard core basketball fan this is your time of the year. I have to admit to laughing a little at football fans about "making the playoffs." Basketball has had that process for decades, Two differences stand out between the two. First, the NCAA Football Selection Committee decided to make public their week to week standings. I am not sure whether that is good or bad news. The other difference is that the basketball just will not tell fans much of anything. One really easy thing for the Basketball Selection Committee is that conference tournaments make a lot of decisions for them. I've never been much of a fan for post season conference tournaments. A few upsets can really cause chaos and a lot of deserving teams get left at home. Football selectors got really lucky that Ohio State won the championship. Otherwise, we'd be talking about the TCU bump for years. A team like Murray State, who is certainly deserving of a bid, may be left alone. Alabama finished 12-4 and won the SEC West. That had never happened to any conference, and that may still be the case.
The winners in Nashville will the fans of the two losing school tonight. I'd stand on a chair and conduct an auction just for Kentucky fans. I'd start at a thousand as an opening big. They'll pay, and we think football fans are crazy. In the past I've often ordered tickets from several school and sold them to KU fans. How'd that work? It paid for my trip in Atlanta for five days. Here's the deal about the teams. Each thinks they can actually win the tournament. That's kind of sad, but athletes are used to winning.
Can anyone actually beat Kentucky? The second most mentioned team is Florida. Like Alabama, the Gators have lost a bunch of close games, and had to deal with big injuries. Florida now has those kids back. I think Arkansas can give the Cats a run. The Razorback game is unlike anyone else in the SEC. LSU has a couple of big men that could offset a little of the Kentucky insider game. Unfortunately, you never know if the Tigers will show up. I think its pretty obvious that the only team that can Kentucky is Kentucky. All teams, even great ones, can have bad nights. The Wildcats have had some close calls but no one seems to remember those losses. I don't buy into the argument that Kentucky is twice the team they were in the first half of the season. One other team that could possibly give them a game is Vandy. They shoot the ball so well. They are my dark horse.
Alabama's problem with Florida is that their are clear match up problems. And, the Tide doesn't have enough players to win more than a game in my opinion. The Tide will give it a shot though. You can argue that the Tide is almost as good as when Tarrant and Hale were hurt. I don't think that's true, but the way Anthony has put together this new team has been impressive. Whether anyone else in the nation wants to admit the SEC's strength that is irrelevant now. Now the SEC is on the edge of showing everyone if they are good or not. I think they are good. We have at least eight teams that are good enough to dance. Let's give the league some credit. Biggest factor in the Tournament? The officials on the floor. It's always been that way, and will always be that way. If the referees give the green light to mix it up the winner is Kentucky.
We need to give Levi Randolph a big round of applause for making All-SEC as a player and All-American as a student. I thought that he deserved to be first team due to value to his team, not to mention his talent.
