'Bama needs three good recruiting years...
"buckle up" Johnson... |
The Avery Johnson show is going to need a couple of more years to get everything in place to make a run for an SEC title. I don't doubt that Johnson can do it, but we need to be realistic in our expectations for his program. 'Bama is returning some potentially good players. Perhaps a couple of great players are coming back. Despite all the haters, Anthony Grant didn't leave a bare cupboard. It's not stocked with five star players, but there are some good players.back for Johnson's first year. A couple could be All-SEC type players. Who's who in this returning bunch?
1 Once Retin Obasahan shook off some nagging injuries he started to play like a star. He is a great defender, a shot blocker extraordinaire, and finishes plays. If his shooting improves over the summer, the SEC better watch out...
2 Justine Coleman was a pretty good little point guard last season. Look for a monumental step forward this year. There isn't a better coach in America to help Coleman progress than Avery Johnson. An NBA point guard turned coach is going to light the fuse on this little man. Just wait and see.
3 Shannon Hale has played great and played poorly. You can always look at Shannon to see his state of mind. Under Grant he played cautiously and it hurt his game. He is a shooter and a scorer. Under Johnson he'll always have the green light to jack one up. I'm excited for his future.
4 Michael Kessens has some potential. He has some considerable potential. Last season he played well in spurts but looked awfully soft at time. There will be a new attitude and more confidence. A great year under the boards from Michael could propel the Tide to a better year.
5 Jimmie Taylor isn't going to score a bunch of points, but he is a shark in the paint. Last season he became a legitimate defensive force inside. He also developed a nice little baby hook that showed potential.
6. Riley Norris surprised a lot of fans with his hustle, outside shooting, and some fierce rebounding. He is fast, he isn't quick as some, but he has a lot of court sense. He was solid player who logged in some big minutes.
Later this week we'll talk about the rest, the transfers, and our freshman.
