Bama comeback falls short...
Alabama basketball is what it is. It is a program currently mired in mediocrity and sitting squarely on the fence. Fall one direction and we are horrible. Fall the other and we are better than decent. Itś where we are, and where we will be until we can make some three-point shots, quit throwing the ball away, and dare we talk about our ineptness in free throw shooting? Itś just who we are. Itś who we were under Anthony Grant. We play good defense out of necessity to avoid embarrassment. We are a good defensive team.
Ironically, we have some good shooters. Riley Norris was an assassin in high school, Armond Davis was a highly rated JUCO shooter. Corbin Collins was over 40% his last year at Morehead. Maybe Alabama is the Land of the Lost for great shooters? All three of our best shooters seem to be in a perpetual slump. Basketball is a simple game. It is about four things: shooting, rebounding, securing the ball, and playing defense. Shooting and securing the ball involves skill. Rebounding and defense are more about self-discipline. In the old days, we called that guts and effort. This team has plenty of guts and effort, enough to win some games they shouldn't win and agonizingly close to games they lose. When the Tide put together a rare night of the good shooting and keep the turnovers down they might beat anyone. It is more likely than not the agonizing games are in store for all of us. That's where we are. All the effort and great coaching aren't going to chang anything. It seems to me that this team has found its identity and we are who are.
Guts and effort are how Riley Norris plays the game. Even when his shots aren´t falling. He is Alabamaś best all around player. Give me five Riley Norris and you have a good team. He is fundamentally a good player. He is rarely wild and out of control. He knows his limitations. He always draws the toughest defensive assignment. Riley is an aggressive rebounder and hits the hardwood for a loose ball. He as also started to take the ball to the basket, post up players down low, and all he needs is someone else to make a few outside baskets to take some pressure off him as the designated shooter.
